Mitsubishi Taken Down By Hackers

A few days ago one of Japan’s most important defense contractors has experienced hacker attack. The local newspapers reported that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ computer network had been taken offline after cyber attack.

Factories constructing submarines and missiles, as well as producing components for nuclear power plants were targeted by what is believed to be the first serious hacker attack aimed at the country’s defense industry. The local media claimed that the intruders seemed to have found what they had been looking for, because experts found out the information was stolen from the company’s computer system during this hacker attack.

Although Mitsubishi Heavy admitted the cyber attack took place, it claimed that the company is still investigating the case and they refused to confirm that any information had been stolen. It seems that over eighty computers infected with malware were found at the Tokyo-based headquarters of Mitsubishi, as well as manufacturing and R&D sites like Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works, Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, and Nagoya Guidance & Propulsion System Works.

All the locations listed above are important sites for defense industry. For example, Kobe can be considered the one-stop shop for people looking forward to purchasing a submarine or components for nuclear power stations. As for Nagasaki Shipyard, this one produces escort ships, which are used when the ships need an escort in foreign parts. Finally, the Nagoya plant produces guided missiles and rocket engines.

At the moment, no one expressed publicly that China is responsible for the hack, though it’s a little out of the league of North Korea, while being too well organized to appear anything different from a foreign power.
