Duqu Virus Appeared In Iran

Iranian officials have confirmed that Duqu computer virus had been launched in the country. Meanwhile, many insecurity analysts believe that Duqu was specifically designed to attack Iran, so that shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

Duqu computer virus is actually based on Stuxnet virus. The latter has been specifically designed to destroy the Iranian nuclear websites. A few days ago the head of the country’s civil defense organization confirmed during the interview to a news agency that PCs at all main sites at risk had been checked. They also pointed out that Iran had been developing particular software destined to combat the virus. Gholamreza Jalali explained that Iran was actually in the initial phase of fighting this virus. According to the report, it isn’t clear yet which outfits had been affected by the virus and how it influenced them. Gholamreza Jalali confirmed that all the outfits and centres that could have been susceptible to contamination were taken under control of the officials.

Duqu virus has been discovered last month, after the largest security software maker in the world Symantec announced it had run into a mysterious virus containing code that was similar to Stuxnet. However, the malware was different both in structure and in purpose – while Stuxnet had been aimed at crippling industrial control systems, this new virus seems to be designed to collect information able to make it easier to start future cyber attacks.

The country claimed this past spring that it had been targeted by another computer virus called “Stars”. When industry observers wondered whether Stars and Duqu could be related, Gholamreza Jalali said that Duqu is considered to be the third virus to hit the country.
