Colleges Will Take Control Of .XXX names

American colleges are too worried that adult industry will be using their names to promote their obscene subject. That’s why the universities are all becoming good customers of the domain name.

According to the reports, the University of Missouri, as well as the Washington University, has been snapping up .xxx domain names in order to avoid links of their names to adult websites. Local media reported that the move was made in frame of a defensive plan, according to which names like mizzou.xxx and washu.xxx away are all in the hands of the schools where they won’t be ever seen again.

The new .xxx domain is expected to be launched later in 2011, and before this everyone having a trademark is provided with the opportunity to reserve names during so-called “sunrise phase”, which is destined to defend organizations against cyber squatters. According to Terry Robb, director of information technology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, he never wanted someone to come across his trademark on an adult website. The University of Missouri also has registered missouritigers.xxx and missouri.xxx, while missouricougars.xxx is perhaps still available.

It will cost around $200 per each domain name for schools and others to own each of their .xxx websites. Nevertheless, St. Louis College of Pharmacy found out this money was well spent to buy stlcop.xxx. Unless it’s a website for startled coppers, it can’t be seen. According to Chad Shepherd, the vice president of information technology for St. Louis College of Pharmacy, it is better to be safe than sorry. For
a school, it is the last think you want – your good name being dragged through the mud over adult content
