Ubuntu Linux, the great white hope of getting Linux on your desktop, is currently planning to launch on mobiles, tablets and smartphones.
Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical company, producing Ubuntu Linux, announced at the Ubuntu Developer Summit that the company is considering developing towards launching Ubuntu Linux at smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs instead of getting ready for Office.
Local media announced that the company has plans to release Ubuntu 12.04, the next long term support of its Linux distribution. This version would be as stable as possible to give the Unity desktop interface. Afterwards, the company is going to expand its popular Linux desktop to all other electronic devices. Shuttleworth announced that it was a natural expansion of his earlier project called “Ubuntu is Linux for human beings”. The company founder claimed that punters have already moved from personal computers to new computing devices, so it is very important for the company to catch up with its community on these platforms.
Meanwhile, people who hate it will be glad to hear that the company will not export Unity, its GNOME-based desktop, beyond personal computers, though it may seem a bit odd. The matter is that when the desktop was shipped, it was viewed as an element of a future Ubuntu tablet. The company confirmed it had been discussing with the partners the possibility to bring Ubuntu to smartphones and tablets for a year and a half, but the industry observers believe that it didn’t mean their significant others, because it seems that the market is already too crowded with OS that don’t communicate to one another. Android is considered Ubuntu’s primary competitor, but the company believes that Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility will make hardware vendors to look for non-Android alternatives.
It seems there a production version of multi-device Ubuntu won’t be developed until April 2014. Moreover, there isn’t even any alpha code, and the company’s founder never mentioned when it would appear. Shuttleworth has only said that the new code would be touch-enabled and available on all the architectures that the OS currently runs on. He is also planning that the OS takes the device-specific code and become open source, which then be rolled into standard Ubuntu.
