Armenian Botnet Creator Jailed for 4 Years

The creator of the Bredolab botnet is finally sentenced to four years in jail: Georgy Avanesov is found guilty of using his botnet to start DDoS attacks which damaged many computer systems.

According to the Office of Armenia’s Prosecutor General, Georgy Avanesov, a 27-year-old Russian citizen of Armenian descent, was arrested in fall 2010 at Armenian airport – the next day after the Dutch High Tech Crime Unit disrupted the Bredolab malware and seized 143 servers used to control the botnet. It was found that Georgy Avanesov used Bredolab to send spam emails and carry out DDoS attacks. In good times, the botnet had 30,000,000 PCs recruited.

In response, Avanesov admitted that he did create the Bredolab, but said that it was then passed on to an unknown person without knowledge of their criminal intentions. Avanesov would have faced various charges related to cyber crime, including altering data stored on the network via means of illegal access, stealing computer information, creating hacking software with the intention to profit from it, and distributing malicious software.

However, most of the charges were dropped due to a decree of “General Amnesty on the Occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Independence Declaration of the Republic of Armenia”. As a result, Georgy Avanesov was only found guilty of controlling DDoS attack on a Russian teleco company Macomnet. According to the Prosecutor’s General Office, Avanesov told 1/4 of his botnet to hit a Macomnet IP address, which damaged the company’s networking equipment and caused service downtime for almost 200 of its customers. 4 years of porridge are supposed to change the behavior of the cyber terrorist.
