Fujitsu Will Invest in Web-Based Data Research

The local media reported that Japanese combine Fujitsu was going to splashing its money in Ireland. Indeed, it turned out that the technology company was investing in a new research program at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute at NUI Galway. The latter was supposed to focus on investigating new models and moneymaking opportunities for Internet-based information.

The research in question is supported by the Irish government via IDA Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland. Professor Stefan Decker (the director of the Institute and one of the leading scientists in the Semantic Web field) will lead the research. Stefan Decker, together with his team of experts, will be studying how different models and approaches are able to integrate available information on the Internet and how these new ideas could be used to help various industries tackle their problems.

During the interview, Professor Decker said that this program can eventually lead to high-end jobs in the country, so Ireland should be quite happy with this fact. DERI, the Digital Enterprise Research Institute, was started 9 years ago with financial backing from Science Foundation Ireland. The Institute has Tim Berners-Lee on its advisory board, and its aims are to help people, organizations and systems to collaborate on a global scale through Semantic Web approaches.

As you (and Fujitsu, of course) can see, this seems to be a very perspective research, and the Minister for Job, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton even claimed that the latest research would definitely lead to greater commercial opportunities and jobs for the country in a whole.
