Press reports say that Dmitry Zubakha, 25, a citizen of the Russian Federation and Moscow resident, was charged with conspiracy to intentionally cause damage without authorization to a protected PC and with being in possession of at least fifteen unauthorized access devices. Dmitry was also charged with aggravated identity theft in a separate case which involved receiving stolen credit card numbers three years ago.

The Russian launched two DDoS attacks against Amazon.com in June 2008. They flooded the Internet retailer’s servers with requests to display pages containing large graphics and photographs, which caused their crash.

Moreover, Zubakha and a co-defendant, Sergey Logashov, later used a similar attack on the other services, including ebay.com and Priceline.com. Apparently, they made a mistake when bragged of the attacks on hacker forums. In addition, Logashov contacted Priceline.com and offered his expertise as a consultant to stop the ongoing attack. According to the police reports, over 28,000 stolen credit card numbers were taken by Zubakha and in Logashov during other hacks. The former was also charged with aggravated identity theft for unauthorized use of the credit card of a Lake Stevens resident. In the meantime, Logashov has still not been found.

Both hackers, if convicted, may face a decade in prison and a possible $250,000 fine. That is without conviction on aggravated identity theft, which could add an extra mandatory 2 years on top of that.
